Part of a series along the Boblingen Way in Glenrothes.
Parking on the A911 is NOT advised. Please use one of the parking waypoints to access the path which crosses the viaduct.
The Balbirnie viaduct carries the line over the River Leven. A plaque at the south end indicates the distance to Leslie.
This is a nano cache, please bring your own pen.
The route of the Leslie branch railway line is now a foot/cycle path known as the Boblingen Way which runs through Glenrothes. The only part of the route which deviates from the original railway line is the section from the Woodside level crossing to the Balbirnie viaduct since this is now cut through by the A911.
The Leslie branch ran just over 4 miles from the main line at Markinch to Leslie. It opened in 1857 and ran five passenger trains per day as well as freight traffic for the mills at Prinlaws and Fettykil. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1932 and freight in 1967. The line crosses the River Leven twice, once at the Balbirnie viaduct and again at the Leslie viaduct.
There was a secondary freight branch to serve the Auchmuty and Rothes paper mills which joined the Leslie branch at Auchmuty junction near Markinch. This branch was in use up to 1990.
