Geocache Description:

The Legend of Odysseus and Aeolus

Aeolus was king of the small island of Aeolia in the seas near Greece. When Odysseus and his crew reached the floating isle, it was with great relief. The friendly king cared for the weary soldiers for a whole month, and when they finally took their leave, Aeolus gave Odysseus a great sack, sewed up so tightly with silver thread that nothing could get in or out.

Being a master of the winds, Aeolus had put every wind into the sack except the west wind. With only the west wind blowing, Odysseus could sail directly home. Once he got home, he could release the other winds and everything would return to normal, and Aeolus advised him not to open the sack at all until that point.

With the west wind at their backs, Odysseus's ship made directly for Ithaca. They sailed for nine days and nine nights, and came so close to Ithaca that they could see the shore. Odysseus, so relieved to be nearly home and exhausted from nine days at sea, fell asleep. His crew, believing a treasure was hidden in the bag, stole Aeolus's gift and opened it. However it was not a treasure they released—it was the howling winds that Aeolus had secured for their safety. A mighty tempest whipped around the ships, driving them far from Ithaca….all the way back to Aeolia….

So what's the significance of the story?

Well, winds have given this cache an interesting history too. While journeying on the opposite shore, this container almost had a home somewhere else as winds had whipped another out of sight. But instead, at the last moment, it reentered its original owner's pocket, only to later to come along on a sailing and be gifted to another. The path to it is not easy—although hopefully nine days of travel won't be required—and some of the features of gz certainly could be mistaken for serpents! But most of all, just like the crew was a bit surprised by what they released from the bag, first-to-finders might just be surprised by what's inside this container.

To prevent any plundering, this one is well concealed. It might take a little while to find, or maybe you'll get lucky and spot it quick, but in either case, do please return it exactly as found once it is located.

Good luck!
