The Eclectic Penguin Geocoin Puzzle Cache Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eclectic Penguin: I've had to archive this as the way Geocoin icons uploaded to the servers has changed - and now breaks the hide mechanism.

It was fun while it worked!

Thanks very much go to Groundspeak for accomodating this, unique hide method while it was available!

Geocache Description:

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS PUZZLE AT PRESENT. The Geocoin icons have been replaced by doppelganger impostors without the coordinates embedded in them. Keep an eye here for further developments.

This is an unusual hide to say the least.  The coordinates for the final cache are not the ones published; the coordinates are somehow found in the icons of a Geocoin!  The cache itself is a relatively straightforward hide on moderate terrain.

There are two steps to solving this puzzle.

1. You need to find the page on Geocaching.com for an Eclectic Penguin Geocoin.  About 1000 of these have been sold over the years. There are a number of different varieties out there - any one will do. You don't necessarlily have to own an Eclectic Penguin Geocoin to obtain the cache page of one of these - you may have discovered one in the past - or you may simply know someone who has one of these coins in their inventory.  Think about it...

2. Here's the hard part.  Find the Geocoin's icon (a little penguin).  The coordinates for this cache are somehow to be found in that image - either the 16x16 (small) or 32x32 (regular) sized icons will do. Both of those penguins know the coordinates but are reluctant to reveal their secret, however when you manage to coax them into telling, they will both tell you the answer in exactly the same way.

Note: The Geocoin's icon may look the same as my avatar on Geocaching.com and the Groundspeak forums however only the Geocoin icon contains the encoded coordinates.
