Geocache Description:

My family and I are new to geocaching and we would like to give back to this wonderful sport! This cache is the first in a series I like to call "We Remember". Please take the time to explore the cache and appreciate its contents. This should be a quick park and grab cache with available parking very close to the cache. We hope you enjoy and never forget “We Remember”.

We Remember is dedicated to the fallen Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technicians I have had the honor to serve with. I ask that you take a moment to read about these remarkable Americans and remember the ultimate sacrifice they made. U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Daniel J. Patron, 26, was killed trying to defuse a roadside bomb at 11:19 a.m. Saturday (August 6th, 2011) in Sangin, Afghanistan, in Helmand province. A 2003 Perry High School graduate, Patron is the son of Kathy and Frank Patron, and younger brother of Matthew Patron. He was married to Cody (Drace) Patron for nearly two years. The couple was stationed at Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, N.C. Patron was serving his third tour of duty. His military service, inspired by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, was set to end last month. “He left in April and would have been home in November,” Kathy said. “The worst part of it is, his eight years in the Marine Corps would have been up in July. Earlier this year, he decided to extend his deployment.” Patron served tours of duty in Iraq in 2005 and 2009. He was a member of the 2nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, which was attached to Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, according to the family. Patron was the second member of his unit to be killed. Two others, including one of Patron’s partners, were seriously wounded during their tour in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. “He’s just been surrounded by death and destruction,” Kathy said. “He was in a horrible, horrible place, and we knew it.” Patron played football at Edison Junior High. In high school, he was in the marching band, theater, select choir, and a member of the speech and debate team, which his mother coached. He loved to help rescue stray dogs. He and his wife owned two — Beefy and Monster — and Patron cared for a third, a bomb-sniffing dog named Boomer, while in Afghanistan. Patron and his wife planned to start a family when his service ended. “He very, very much wanted a family,” Kathy said, sobbing. “They’ve got names for kids. It didn’t happen before he left, so they were going to try when he got home.” -We Remember
