Visit the historic Putiki Marae and learn about some of the early history of the Wanganui River.
Putiki was the principal Maori settlement near the Whanganui River mouth. It is on the southern banks of the river opposite the modern-day city of Wanganui.
Maori from Putiki signed Edward Jerningham Wakefield's deed of purchase for Wanganui, although prominent Putiki chiefs such as Te Anaua later described the purchase as 'being of no significance'.
The Church Missionary Society established a mission station next to the settlement and many of the pa's significant leaders converted to Christianity.
In the conflict that threatened Wanganui in 1847 and again in 1864 Putiki Maori fought with the Crown in battles against Maori from the upper reaches of the Whanganui River.
Whanganui is the ancestral home of Ngāti Tūpoho, Ngāti Tūmango and Ngā Paerangi, hapū (sub-tribes) of Te Āti Haunui-a-Pāpārangi.
Pūtiki, the marae of Ngāti Tūpoho and Ngāti Tūmango, is known as a place where all Whanganui tribes can link together. The traditional, finely carved meeting house, is one of a number of noteworthy meeting houses along the Whanganui River.
Noted carver, Hōri Pukehika, (1840? – 1932) a leader of Te Āti Haunui-a-Papārangi of the lower Whanganui River and one of the last of his people skilled in the old traditions, helped as a small boy carve the tekoteko on the meeting house on the marae, Te Paku-o-te-Rangi, which opened in 1877.
It is a well kept Marae and it is interesting to look at the buildings including the meeting place which has a very low door. You may not enter the grounds unless you have been formally welcomed on to the marae.
If the marae has people in the grounds it may not be a suitable time to search. It is often deserted durning the day except if there is a tangi.
The cache is a small bullet container with room for a log. Please bring your own pencil. No room for swaps
The cache is hidden outside the marae. You may also like to find the other two historic Putiki caches at St Paul's Memorial Church and Korokoto.
