Geocache Description:

SWAG of Oklahoma will be hosting a major clear up project of the abandoned Sandhill cemetery.  The first work day will be 3 November 2012, starting at 10:00 AM.

Sandhill cemetery is a small forgotten cemetery in Greer County Oklahoma.  This cemetery is over grown and has not been taken care of in several decades.  We have been in touch with the local land owner and he has welcomed us with open arms to come in and clean up the lot.  Family members of the land owners have agreed to haul off the trash and brush.  The lot appears to be about 50’ by 70’.

On 3 November we will meet at the cemetery and start of by surveying the land and establishing the boundaries and identify trees that need to be removed and mark the head stones.  We will also start the clean-up process by clearing the trial into the cemetery.  This project will take a couple of Saturdays to complete so we will plan the second clean-up day for a weekend in January and the final clean-up in mid to late March.  So if you cannot make it to the first clean up date there will be at least two more Saturdays to get involved.

Chain Saws have already been coordinated, however we need people to help mark trees, and headstones with ribbon, and drag out the brush.  We will need machetes, and hatchets, heavy duty rakes, small hand saws and heavy duty tree pruners.  Everyone will need to have leathers gloves, and wear long pants and long sleeves.  It is also highly recommended that everyone wear some kind of eye protection.

A few of our SWAG members have done some research on this cemetery and have discovered that the Texas State Line used to run north of this location.  This location is also part of one of the first shelter belts in Oklahoma.  It has also been discovered that at least four of the last names on headstone were part of this areas 1910 US Census.   The earliest marked headstone is from 1901 and the latest is marked 1941.
