Geocache Description:

Mariager - The town of Roses
Mariager were, before the founding of the Bridgettine Abbey in approx. 1410, only a small fishing village and ferry landing on the route between Randers and Aalborg. The founding of the abbey caused a boom in local crafts and trade, at the same time the town became a favored destination for thousands of christians in the nobility, therefore several hostels and inn’s were established around Mariager. At the time of the reformation in Denmark in 1536, the tides turned, and both the town and the activities experienced a downturn. When the town in 1592 became a market town, the population was reduced to approx. 400-500 inhabitants.

Unique urban environment:
The industrious market-town period, in the 17th and 18th century, have influenced the present day urban environment. Several restored timber-framed houses can still be found, by taking a walk around the cobble stone streets. The town is well preserved, because of visionary citizens who - for more than 50 years ago - took a initiative to maintain the market town environment, and a benevolent town council, which receipted with strict regulations for the preservation and appearance of the town. In Mariager you will not find grey fiber cement roofing, modernized facades, satellite dishes or garish advertisements. Here you can enjoy the urban environment in a industrious present with respect for the past. On the harbour, under the listed coal crane, which is the last of its kind, you can also experience the vestige of the industrialization. Here coal was loaded, and transported by the railway to the gasworks in Viborg. The vintage railway, the old coal crane and Mariager Salt Center today resides, side by side in harmony, with respect of each other and tells each their story about the market town in both the present time and the past. The modern day industrialization first influenced Mariager around 1960. The best known remnants of this period is the salt works at Dania, which today is a part of the Akzo Nobel Group, and are the largest salt works in Nothern Europe.

The Town of Roses:
In Mariager you will experience an ambiance from times past. But Mariager is also known as the town of roses. In generations the inhabitants of the town has planted and tended an abundance of different kinds of roses. You will find both hollyhock, sling-roses and wild roses in many different colours in the streets and gardens around Mariager, where they romantically crawl up the crooked facades of the old timber-framed houses. Mariager is not only a "set piece", but a genuine pearl! - A living attraction for tourists and a priviledge for de hospitable inhabitants. The population of Mariager is today around 2.500 inhabitants.
