Geocache Description:

12-12-12 "End of the World" Multi-Event

Why a 12-12-12 Multi-Event?

12-12-12 is that last in the series of same date multi-events (8-8-8, 9-9-9, 10-10-10, 11-11-11). It also happens to be close to 21-12-12 which some predict to be the end of the world according to the Mayan Calendar. This date also happens to be the 12th month of the 12th year of Geocaching!

This event is also part of a world wide multi-event and a unique collectable geocoin is being prepared for all the events making up the multi-event around the world. The Wellington event coin has its own colour scheme, jointly designed by -gonefishing- and Guwapo, and shared with multi-events in Dunedin and Invercargill. The coin is fully trackable and features a 12-12-12 motif as well as Mayan design elements. Once the artwork is finalised, it will be posted here along with a link for ordering.

When:

On 12 Dec 2012 of course! Meet at 6.30pm.

What:

Since it is a week night, we will keep it simple. A family friendly social gathering, BYO takeaway picnic dinner, if you wish. Come and swap your tall tales about the one that got away, or compare notes about those fiendishly difficult puzzles, or just come to put a face to those names you've seen in the log books.

Where:

Percy's Reserve, Lower Hutt. A large grassy area with plenty of surrounding native bush, and of course a few nearby caches just waiting to be found.

What's all this stuff about the End of the World?:

The Mayan calendar is based (not surprisingly) on the Mayan system of counting. They used several different cycles, such as a 260 day "short count" cycle, and a longer 5,125 year "long count" cycle. The date 21-12-12 is considered to correspond to to the end of a 5,125 year long count cycle. Some have chosen to interpret the end of the long count as the end of the Mayan calendar and hence a prediction of the end of the world, whereas it is really just the end of one calendar period. Similar in concept to the way we track Centuries or Millennia.

MultiEvent Geocoin

This is a 12 sided copper geocoin with a 2 inch diameter (larger than usual). MultiEvent Geocoins share a common design for all events worldwide, but each event has its own unique colour scheme. In this case, Wellington, Dunedin and Invercargill are sharing a colour scheme. On the front, the coin features a Mayan design with a stylised Sun design. The reverse features modern and Mayan design elements, including luminous digits on the clock. Coins are available for $20 each. This coin is only available to event attendees before the event - place your order here!

Geocoin Update: As of 11-12-12, all currently available geocoins have been reserved. If you would like one but have missed out, complete the order form to go onto a wait list for any coins not sold at participating events.
