Geocache Description:

My first hide in memory of family members that are important to me and the community. The waypoints show dedications for influential people both in my life and the community.

The Fatland family has been a big part of the Condon and Gilliam County Community. Fatland’s Tire store started in 1919 with the help of Clair Hopper. They then decided that they could not make a living from the business. They decided to flip a coin to see who could leave. Ernie Fatland loss and stayed with the company. The business has now gone through 3 generations of Fatlands as owners and had 4 generations of employees. Besides owning a family business for almost 100 years, Ernie trained as a pilot during World War I but never served overseas. He served 5 terms in the Oregon Legislature – 3 terms in the Oregon House of Representatives (one as Speaker of the House) and 2 terms in the Oregon Senate. Jack served in the Navy during WW II and during the Korean War. He was a long time scout master here. He also served on the school board for many years. Jack was the owner of family business for many years and worked until the day he died. Jack was very respected in the community and known throughout the area as well. The business is now owned and operated by two of Jacks sons. Make sure to take in the sites around town to see all the newly restored businesses on main street, and if need be fill up on fuel before you leave on your next geocache trip. Thank you, Great-Grandpa Ernie and Grandpa Jack for being an inspiration to so many, especially me. Love you and miss you.
