Geocache Description:

Railways hold a fascination, especially abandoned ones……
This cache is on an old railway line at an abandoned railway station accessed down the old track.  Evidence of the old line can be seen from the gantry foundations, some deep cuttings and a tunnel.
This was the second railway to be built through the area and was known as the Town Hill Deviation completed in 1915 from Pietermaritzburg to Hilton.  The railway route crosses Old Howick Road about 700m below the Worlds View Road intersection and runs south, almost parallel to Old Howick Road, to the Clarendon Reservoir where it takes a 90º bend to pass under the Old Voortrekker Road.  It then carries on westward through some delightful patches of indigenous forest, through a 94m long tunnel then onwards for about another 2.5km to reach the existing Transnet main line about 300m below the Cedara Tunnels.  This line was the main line from Durban to Johannesburg from its inception in 1915 until 1960 when the Cedara Tunnels were commissioned, it was then abandoned and the tracks lifted. You can follow the old railway line, but the shortest route is to follow the waypoints.
Please be aware that you are traveling through a declared Conservancy and off-road motor bikes and quad-bikes are discouraged because of the environmental damage they may incur. Please stay on the road. The road is pretty rough and care should be taken if using a low clearance vehicle.  From the second waypoint to the cache it is 2.7km.
The cache is at 948m AMSL
