Geocache Description:

"After Baling"

With baling season over and a lull in the fieldwork, the youth of the village celebrate the Ebisu Festival (November 20) with a field and sports day. In the year Taisho 8, the five villages of Takagi incorporated to make the village of Yamato. Until that time each village held its own Ebisu Festival sports day. The rivalry of the various clans that made up Yamato was as strong as ever. As there was little to be had for entertainment in that area everyone looked forward to watching the athletes practice. Every event brought smiles to participants and observers alike but the event that was the highlight of the festivities was the 100 meter bale race. Contestants ran with 60 kilogram bales called tsuchiwara on their shoulders. The winning athletes won prizes such as 18 liter barrels of soy sauce and various small prizes. There booths selling such treats and edibles as candy, noodles and dumplings. It was a noisy and lively festival that gave locals and chance to enjoy themselves after a season of hard work.
