Geocache Description:

A new trail is being established from the parking lot near the bridge to the East Henderson Station site, or a site near the old 19th Century Oxcart trail. The parking lot has been designated as an access for an Outdoor Classroom project since it is close to the Minnesota New Country School in Henderson and the Le Sueur County Park on the bluff to the east..

The Minnesota River Valley was formed by the ancient River Warren during the glacial melting periods. Because it was navigable for over 300 miles the Minnesota River became important as a route to and from the Mississippi River for the Native American Indians, Fur Traders, White Settlers and Military. In 19th century a portion of the Old Oxcart trail from Fort Snelling to Canada existed along here. From 1855-1870 the Minnesota River became a very busy artery for settlers and goods coming in to the new state of Minnesota. A very busy Steamboat Trade developed. Over 40 steamboats operated between Fort Snelling and Fort Ridgley. Some made the trip twice a week! Then the railroad came in 1867 and improved the access to this very fertile valley.

This cache is on the new trail being opened as an Outdoor Classroom for the use of schools of the area.  The container is a cammoed pill bottle with log and room for small trade items.  The initial cache has a Travel Bug and some trade items. It is hidden by students from the nearby Minnesota New Country Charter School in Henderson.  Please enjoy.
