MOG 2012: Back to Mark Twain Lake Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

rocksusan: Well it was a micro event in terms of how many people came but those who came had a really good time. Still lots of caches up there for me to find so maybe we'll try having another event at MTL.

Geocache Description:

November 2-4, 2012

ATTENTION: due to lack of interest, I'm scaling back the scope of this event. Please check the logs below for more information. MOG stands for Mostly Only Geocaching, a phrase coined by fellow SLAGA cacher Rocfish who hosted this event in 2010 and 2011.  It's dedicated to hunting old MOGA caches that you still haven't found. Posted coords are for the Sentry Ridge area of Indian Creek Campground.

I know there's a similar event being held at Honey Creek Resort the following weekend but this is for those of us who can't make the trip to Iowa.

Of course there will be other fun.  Most of us camp, although there is indoor lodging available nearby.  Come for the weekend, or just for a day, whatever fits your schedule.  Like my other events, there's nothing terribly organized about this one.  It will probably go something like this:

Friday night: hang around a campfire till we get sleepy
Saturday day:   caching
Saturday night: more campfire and a potluck meal.  I thought this year it would fun if we tried our hands at chili, soups or stews.  Not exactly a "cookoff", but this way we all get a complete meal even if we have low turnout.  There are hookups at the campsites so we can plug in crockpots etc.
Sunday:  a couple of years ago we hit the VFW in Monroe City for their waffle breakfast.  I'll check and see if that's still running. After breakfast, more caching

MISC. INFO
HUNTING:  There is no hunting allowed in the Recreation Areas. However, in the other MTL areas this there is bow hunting for deer and gun season for assorted smaller critters.  Bring along your BLAZE ORANGE!

RECREATION AREAS with high concentration of caches:  Indian Creek, Stoutsville, Frank Russell, Robert E. Allen.

CAMPING:  You can reserve a campsite (see website). If you do please log where you'll be, if you don't mind.  The campground is usually pretty open this time of year so you could still find a nice site if you just show up.  All sites have electric ($18).  Full hookup sites are $24.

OTHER LODGING:  See related website

TERRAIN:  If your introduction to MOGA was Rend Lake or Iowa, or if you've never cached around MTL, note the terrain rating:  2.5.  It's much hillier than either Rend Lake or Iowa, but in general the underbrush is not as bad.  There are some park and grabs, but not as many as RL or Iowa.  Most caches are going to require some bushwhacking. Just lettin' you know what you're in for :-)

Please put this event on your watchlist, I'll probably have more bits of information later.

Pretty much everything you need to know about the area can be found at the related website.

Mark Twain Lake is a beautiful area and there are still LOTS of caches there!
