Sergeant’s Crag is partially hidden behind Eagle Crag in the view from Stonthwaite. It comes into its own either by walking up Langstrath, or from close to the summit of Eagle Crag. Most people will arrive here from the nearby Eagle Crag. I can’t imagine to many pairs of boots are seen on the ascent suggested by Wainwright on Sergeant’s Crag 4 in his Central Fells. Doubtless now I’ve written that, a large number of perverse cachers will prove me wrong!
As ever with me it is a small tat free box, containing just a log book and pen. There is room for small trackables. It is underneath a flat boulder. Please see spoiler photos as I wouldn’t want you to come all this way and DNF
Please avoid the temptation to write the ubiquitous one liners – you will have spent an hour or two getting to this cache, so spend another minute or two on your log entry.
I have tried to establish who the Sergeant that the crag is named after was. One source that it was the same person as Sergeant Man, the Wainwright above Langdale. Unfortunately that proved to be a circular debate, as Sergeant Man was then described as being the same person as Sergeant's Crag! Another source (Place names of Cumbria - Joan Lee) said it was named after a John Sargyante, a Borrowdale resident of 1602. Any other suggestions are welcome!
