La cache si trova presso la cima del Pizzo Valgrande (da non confondere con la Punta Valgrande poco distante). E’ possibile arrivarci in vari modi ma il più semplice (anche se più lungo) consiste nel passare dall’Alpe Veglia quindi dal Lago delle Streghe.
Raggiungete in auto il paese di Varzo (VB) quindi seguite le indicazioni per “San Domenico”. Dopo aver raggiunto tale località proseguite ancora sulla strada in direzione “Nembro”/”Ponte Campo” dove, nei pressi di un ponte, termina l’asfalto (WP1). Vista la scarsità di posti auto vi consiglio di parcheggiare nel piazzale antistante il ponte (a pagamento, 3€). Nei pressi c’è un agriturismo che, quando aperto, offre gustosi pranzi e merende.
Dal parcheggio attraversate il ponte e immediatamente sulla destra troverete il sentiero che sale fino a intersecare la strada sterrata che porta all’Alpe Veglia. Percorretela fino al punto in cui si apre la bellissima conca quindi svoltate a sinistra (WP2) in direzione dell’agglomerato di baite di Cianciavero, infine seguite le indicazioni “Lago delle Streghe” (sentiero a destra delle case). Attraverserete un bellissimo lariceto che vi consiglio di percorrere in silenzio, io quando sono salito (al mattino presto) ho potuto vedere alzarsi in volo un gallo forcello e una coturnice.
Raggiunto il lago (posto affascinante con fantastica vista sul Monte Leone, montagna che ci sovrasterà per tutto il percorso) seguite le indicazioni “Lago d’Avino”/”Passo del Croso”. Il sentiero (denominato “F30”) è ben segnato e sale con pendenza costante in direzione sud-ovest, alla vostra sinistra potete vedere la cima dove si trova la cache. Usciti dal bosco dovrete salire su una pietraia per un centinaio di metri dopo di che il sentiero comincia a piegare a sud, da questo punto dovrete prestare maggiore attenzione in quanto i segni si fanno più rari. Tenete come riferimento il ripido costone che vedrete davanti a voi sapendo che il sentiero vi passa al di sopra.
Dopo un tratto pianeggiante dovrete scendere alla diga del Lago d’Avino (in un punto esposto ma sono presenti cavi d’acciaio che fanno da sicurezza) e attraversarla. Il sentiero sale dritto davanti a voi, tenete come riferimento una piccola cappella azzurra quindi, nella Piana d’Avino, i paletti di segnalazione. Raggiunto un piccolo lago alpino (WP3) dovrete salire alla cima con percorso libero prestando attenzione ai punti migliori e meno ripidi per l’ascensione.
La cache si trova poco distante dalla cima (contrassegnata da un paletto metallico) e consiste in una scatola di alluminio. Contiene: logbook, 3 matite, temperino, foglio di avviso (tutti da non asportare). ATTENZIONE: per piacere rimettetela a posto accuratamente in posizione VERTICALE!!! Grazie
Per tornare avete tre soluzioni (in realtà ce ne sarebbero di più ma preferisco descrivere le più semplici in quanto alcune prevedono passaggi esposti e/o tratti molto ripidi).
1) ripercorrere il sentiero fatto per la salita.
2) Tornati sui vostri passi e attraversata la diga sul tratto pianeggiante del sentiero troverete una deviazione a destra (WP4) che vi riporterà a Cianciavero per un sentiero che prima scende ripido a zig-zag poi attraversa un bellissimo lariceto tenendo il torrente che scende dal lago sulla destra. Potrete ammirare delle interessanti “marmitte dei giganti”, particolari forme di erosione della roccia create dall’azione combinata della corrente e dei sassi da essa portati. Giunti a Cianciavero tornate all’auto seguendo il percorso fatto all’andata.
3) Ridiscesi al laghetto (WP3) proseguite a sinistra verso il Passo del Croso raggiunto il quale scendete verso est lungo una dorsale seguendo sempre il sentiero “F30” e le indicazioni Alpe Vallè. Attenzione che dopo circa 500 mt il sentiero piega a sinistra per evitare un tratto ripido quindi, dopo altri 600 mt, gira nuovamente a destra fino a giungere all’alpe da dove, seguendo una strada sterrata, potrete tornare all’auto.
NOTA GUSTOSA: Se apprezzate il formaggio dovete assolutamente acquistarne una fetta presso il caseificio della famiglia De Giuli che fa pascolare le proprie vacche nella conca dell’Alpe Veglia. Si tratta di un formaggio genuino e gustoso definito genericamente “grasso d’alpe”, molto simile alla Fontina o al rinomato Bettelmatt. Durante il periodo estivo la vendita viene effettuata nella prima casa che trovate salendo sulla strada sterrata dopo la sbarra. Da fine settembre la famiglia si trasferisce a San Domenico, e il formaggio è acquistabile poco distante dal ponte del parcheggio, circa al punto WP5. Non solo mangerete un formaggio eccezionale ma contribuirete a mantenere “viva” un tradizione che, purtroppo, rischia di scomparire impoverendo (non solo dal punto di vista economico) le nostre montagne.

The cache is located at the summit of “Pizzo Valgrande” (not to be confused with the “Punta Valgrande” that is nearby). It is possible to get there in different ways, but the easiest (although longer) is to pass from Alpe Veglia then from “Lago delle Streghe” (Lakes of the Witches).
Drive to the village of Varzo (VB) and then follow the signs to "San Domenico". After reaching that location still continue on the road towards "Nembro" / "Ponte Campo" where, near a bridge, the asphalt ends (WP1). Given the scarcity of parking places I recommend you park in the square in front of the bridge (for a fee, € 3). Nearby is a farm restaurant that, when opened, offers tasty lunches and snacks.
From the car park, cross the bridge and immediately turn right at the path that climbs up to cross the dirt road that leads to Alpe Veglia. Go until the point where the beautiful dell opens then turn left (WP2) in the direction of the agglomeration of huts named “Cianciavero”, after follow the sign for "Lago delle Streghe" (path to the right of the houses). You will cross a beautiful larch that I recommend to walk in silence, when I'm gone (early morning) I could see it take off a grouse and partridge.
Reached the lake (charming place with fantastic views of the “Monte Leone”, mountain stands above us all the way), follow the signs "Lago d'Avino" / "Passo del Croso." The path (called "F30") is well marked and go up with a constant slope to the south-west, on your left you can see the top where you will find the cache. You have to climb out of the forest on rocky ground for a hundred meters after which the path begins to bend to the south, from this point you will have to pay more attention because the signs are more rare. Keep as a reference the steep ridge that you see in front of you knowing that the path passes above.
After a flat section you have to go down to the dam of Lake Avino (in an exposed point but there are steel cables that act as security) and go through it. The path goes straight ahead, keep as a reference, a blue small chapel then, in the Plain of Avino, the signaling stakes. Reached a small alpine lake (WP3) you have to climb to the top with free path paying attention to the best spots and less steep for ascension.
The cache is located not far from the top (that is marked by a metal stake) and consists of an aluminum box. Contains: logbook, 3 pencils, pencil sharpener, paper warning (all not to remove). WARNING: please put it back in place carefully in a VERTICAL position! Thanks
To go back you have three solutions (in fact there would be more, but I prefer to describe the simplest ones, because others providing some exposed and/or steep slopes parts).
1) trace the path made for the climb.
2) Returning your steps and after cross the dam, on the flat section of the trail there is a deviation to the right (WP4) which takes you back to Cianciavero by trail that first descends steeply by zig-zag then through a beautiful larch keeping on the right the river flowing down from lake. You will see some interesting “marmitte dei giganti" (“giants potholes"), particular forms of tock erosion created by the combined current and stones action. Once in Cianciavero back to the car following the route taken in the first leg.
3) Once you return to the pond (WP3) go left towards the “Passo del Croso” at which descend along a ridge to the east, still following the path "F30", direction Alpe Vallè. Please note that after about 500 meters the path turns left to avoid a steep then, after another 600 meters, turn right again until you reach the alp from where, following a dirt road, you can return the car.
TASTY NOTE: If you like cheese you should definitely buy a slice at the dairy of family De Giuli doing graze their cows in the dell of “Alpe Veglia”. It is a pure and delicious cheese called generically " alpine fat ", very similar to the famous Fontina or Bettelmatt. During the summer sales are made in the first house you find going up the dirt road after the bar. From the end of September, the family moved to San Domenico, and the cheese is sold not far from the bridge of the parking lot, about to waypoint WP5. Not only will eat an exceptional cheese but will help to keep "alive" a tradition which, unfortunately, is likely to disappear impoverishing (not only from the economic point of view) our mountains.
