Geocache Description:

In the westward expansion of our great nation, amidst the perils of wilderness travel, I imagine the name of this cache was an oft-shouted phrase.

My great-great-great grandfather, Hiram Straight, came across the country on the Oregon Trail, part of the “Great Migration of 1843” with Marcus Whitman, who founded the Whitman Mission near Walla Walla Washington. Packing all their belongings into the new Conestoga, his family hitched a couple pairs of oxen, and joined the other prairie schooners heading westward. With nearly a thousand emigrants and 5000 heads of livestock on the trail they worked together—overcoming the daily needs of families, new and deadly diseases, occasional skirmishes with natives, and especially the changing hazards of a harsh environment—to go after a near-impossible dream. Because of the courage of these bold and hard-working adventurers, who forged a wagon road through the rugged Blue Mountains, many others would later choose to follow the trail that led to the Willamette Valley, in the heart of this great state (traveling very close to the eventual birthplace of our own geocaching hobby).

All of this may be very interesting, but it won’t help you find the cache. However, the title should give you a general idea about where to look. You will want to take note though, that this cache is not typical of these locations, is not hidden in any metal structures, and is not magnetic.

There is room for most vehicles to pull off the road near the cache, perhaps just past the cache. As always, be safe and pay attention to moving vehicles when caching near traffic. During certain seasons there may be several muggles fishing in the local sloughs, so you should ready your clandestine skills. Make sure the cache is re-hidden well for the next cacher.
