Geocache Description:

Whether you arrived on wheels, on foot, by boat or noble steed, the Blue Mountain area has something to offer you.

The purpose of this cache is to encourage exploration of this beautiful area, which includes Maclay Flat.  The coordinates will take you first to the main Blue Mountain Trailhead.    The cache is not located at this coordinate. This is where you will do a bit of research. There are questions to be answered which will help you locate the cache. If you read the brochure and the signs, it should not be difficult. The cache is a lock box with a log book and room for small trade items. I hope you enjoy learning more about this area. There are also many great caches on the trails from this trailhead and at Maclay Flat which you should enjoy. HAVE FUN!   Brief History: President Harry S. Truman signed an order transferring 4,869 acres of the Ft. Missoula Military Reservation to Lolo National Forest.  Prior to the 1970's, the area was used without regulation.  Garbage and abandoned vehicles littered the area. Cross country vehicles and cattle grazing caused erosion, shooting brought public safety hazards, and weeds were out of control.  In 1975, civic groups and the Forest Service launched an effort to clean up the area.  A plan was put into place to restore the recreation area.  Between 1986 and 1992 the Recreation Plan was completed and implemented. The Blue Mountain Recreation Area is now a beautiful destination for all to enjoy. There really is something for everyone in this area!  We love to hike here often with our dog and, on occasion, have arrived at Maclay Flat by kayak.   To answer the questions, you will need to read the signs at the trailhead and find information in the Blue Mountain Recreation Area brochure. If no brochures are available, there is an online version on the Lolo National Forest website: (visit link)   Q1   What are the hours Blue Mountain Recreation Area is closed? Q2   According to the signs, there are Trail Restrictions "To Reduce_________Between Users." Q7   Maclay Flat has hiking loops with interpretive signs.  What is required to be attached to a dog at Maclay Flat? Q8   In 1964, 81 of these were removed from the area.  What were they?
