From 1860 until 1963, Youghal railway station was where the action was at - transport of passengers and animals. Matches in Cork, Thurles and Croke Park, and pilgrimages to Knock Shrine, were standing room only. Of particular interest were the summer trains filled to the brim with Cork city folks - many of whom laid roots in the town. The station survived for a further 10 years after regular passenger services ended, with the transport of beet to Mallow.
The old station had fallen into hopeless disrepair until re-roofed in the past couple of years. It is now boarded with an ugly metal fence. Nevertheless, it remains a beautiful and evocative sight adjacent to the main beach promenade. BYOP
