Lake Shikotsu is a beautiful lake with an average depth of 265 meters.
It is proud of the 2nd depth in Japan which ranks second to Tazawako in Akita Prefecture, and is figuratively expressed as "a huge water jar."
Incidentally, since the bottom of a lake will be referred to as being located downward about 115 meters from the sea surface, it is surprise.
Through every year, although water temperature is very low, it does not freeze because of the depth at a severe winter term, and serves as "the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan."
It is surrounded by the deep primeval forest and a beautiful scene every season is shown in silence.

支笏湖は長径13キロメートル、短径5キロメートルのほぼ東西に長いマユ型をしており、周囲約40キロメートル、最大深度約360メートル、平均水深約265メートルのきれいな湖です。秋田県の田沢湖に次ぐ、日本で2番目の深度を誇り「巨大な水がめ」と形容されます。ちなみに湖底は海面より約115メートルも下に位置しているということになるので驚きです。水温は年間を通して非常に低いですが、その深さゆえ厳冬期にも凍ることはなく「日本最北の不凍湖」となっております。深い原生林に囲まれ、静けさのなか、四季折々の美しい景観を見せてくれます。
