Geocache Description:

This is the fourth cache in our series Views of Kingskerswell.

Kerswell Downs lie to the west of the village and have been an important aspect in many young people’s lives. The woodland is mainly ash, with species including sweet chestnut, larch and field maples. There have been additions, including small-leaved limes planted in 2004.

In the past one hundred and fifty seedling trees had been planted on the Downs by the 1st Kingskerswell Scouts – the Scouts still use the Downs for camp fires as well as outdoor activities such as tracking and fire lighting.

There are two parts of the downs. The eastern section was given to the village, and the western part is owned by Bardon Aggregates. In the western part there is a good stand of ancient oaks and these are thought to be more than 400 years old and have grown in a coppiced hazel area.

In amongst the woodland lies Kerswell Down Hill which is the site of archaeological features (along with Whilborough Common) is currently a Scheduled Ancient Monument http://www.ancientmonuments.info/en36029-prehistoric-field-system-and-settlements-o

This area, along with Whilborough Common, holds a special place in Mo’s life. As a child growing up in North Whilborough he spent many happy hours on the Common and Downs playing with his brother and friends from the village. Mo can often be seen on the Common and Downs while out running nowadays.

In order to get to this cache you will need to use one or more footpaths (depending on where you start from) Because of the terrain it is not a cache suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. You are looking for a 300ml screw top container – happy hunting. Please replace the cache carefully.
