Under 1600-talet byggdes många vägar runt om i landet och efter dessa etablerades gästgiverier och krogar. Under 1700-talets slut ökade antalet krogar, på grund av brännvinslagstiftningen, det var framför allt på brännvinet man gjorde sin förtjänst. Pilkrog har troligen sitt namn efter Hans Pihl, som var krögare här under 1600-talets andra hälft. Krogen förlorade sin betydelse när järnvägen kom 1860 för att helt upphöra 1874.
