Geocache Description:

Please replace cache as you found it.  Please replace small rubber band around log.  You will need to bring your own pen. This is a unique container....so enjoy the hunt! A fun Halloween cache. CONGRATS TO SALZ69 FTF!

First organized by one of the city's founding fathers Marcus Towle, making it the oldest cemetery in the city.

Oak Hill is a fairly modest sized cemetery covering about twenty-one acres. It is located near the central part of the city bounded by Hohman / Lyman Avenues and 165th / Kenwood Streets.

Since Oak Hill was one of the first cemeteries in Hammond, many of the city's founding families are entombed there. Hence many of the cemetery's gravestones read like a street map of the city i. e. Hohman, Sibley, Sohl, Muenich, Gostlin, Tapper, just to name a few.

Note the many intricately designed and carved headstones that dot the grounds, they are monuments in their own right. Many are irreplaceable today because their superb quality craftsmanship is cost prohibitive.
