Geocache Description:

The cache is on a pleasant walk along Iron Cove from Bridgewater Park passing under the two Iron Cove bridges on the coastal path towards King George Park, Callan Park and Leichhardt Park.

Iron Cove

People have been crossing Iron Cove and navigating its waters by boats for millennia. The indigenous Cadigal people employed their ingeniously crafted tree-bark canoes to cross and fish this tranquil but shark-infested bay.

The first Iron Cove Bridge was built between 1878-1882 and was supported by eight pairs of iron piers founded some 32 metres below the river’s surface. Its narrow timber deck spanned the great sandstone abutments (or supports of the ends of the bridge superstructure) which still survive.

By the 1940s, the bridge had become unsafe and a replacement bridge was built between 1947-1955 in the Art Deco style.  The old bridge trusses were reused for other bridges in the Forbes district of NSW.

The third bridge was built in concrete in 2011, rising above the sandstone abutments of the original Iron Cove Bridge.

NOTE on 29 March 2014: we are moving away from Balmain. Ozjeeper kindly accepted to adopt our 3 caches in the area, thank you!
