From the time I was old enough to drive, I wanted ’79 Firebird. For my 40th birthday, my husband found one & bought it for me. Everything in & on the car was factory - original, it only had 90k original miles on it, & it started and could be driven. It was one SWEET car!
For 2 years & 2weeks, we worked on it. By the end of that March, the only thing left to do was to replace a couple of the wires & getting it tuned up.
On the afternoon of April 1st, we had our son-in-law to come pick up the car to take it to his fathers’ auto shop, to replace a few wires & finish it out. We handed him $20 for gas and he drove way, with our daughter following behind him in her car. Approximately 10minutes later, the phone rang. It was our daughter… the only thing she said was “Mom, your car is on fire!” Well, with our daughter being the prankster that she is – and the day being April Fools Day – my reply to her was “Yeah! Right! Good one! You’re not April fooling me!” As luck would have it, right then the call was dropped. Seconds later, her husband calls back. The first thing I heard was “Im sorry! It’s a total loss” and then I heard the sirens from the fire truck. That’s when I knew this was no joke!
As the story goes, the wiring issues had caused a fire to ignite under the car. Our daughter told us that as she was following her husband down 503, flames started shooting out from under the vehicle. Her husband didn’t even know it until they went around the curve and he had no brakes at all. He slammed the car into neutral to get it to slow down. By this time, she had also called his cell and told him about the fire. Then he tried, but (like a bad horror movie) the drivers side door wouldn’t open. He literally had to roll down the window and dive out of the car, with it still moving. The fire dept told us that the only reason the car hadn’t completed exploded into flames was because the gas tank was completely full – so no air was able to get into the tank. Needless to say, its a pure miracle that he survived! And thankfully, he had no injuries.
The location of this cache is the closest spot available to the site where the car burned up.
Please gently replace cache where/how found. And please log any DNF's or other problems with this so that they may be addressed as quickly as possible.
