The Port of Piraeus, as the largest Greek seaport, is one of the busiest tourist and commercial ports of the Mediterranean, and is the entryway to the magnificent Greek Islands. Is the largest port in Europe and the third largest in the world in terms of passenger transportation, servicing 20,000,000 passengers annually. The port is also a major employer in the area, with more than 1,500 employees who provide services to more than 24,000 ships every year. Port of Piraeus has been the port of Athens since Archaic times.
In 1456, Piraeus became known as the Aslan Liman (the Lion's Port) of the Turks, taking its name from the marble lion standing at the point at which, later, the old Town Hall was built. The marble lion was stolen in 1688 during Francesco Morozini's well-known expedition against Athens and carried to the Arsenal of Venice, where it still stands today. A copy of the lion statue is on display at the Piraeus Archaeological Museum.

Το λιμάνι του Πειραιά, ως το μεγαλύτερο ελληνικό λιμάνι, είναι ένα από τα πιο πολυσύχναστα τουριστικά και εμπορικά λιμάνια της Μεσογείου, και είναι και η είσοδος για τα υπέροχα ελληνικά νησιά. Ο Πειραιάς είναι το μεγαλύτερο λιμάνι της Ευρώπης και το τρίτο ανά τον κόσμο όσον αφορά μεταφορά επιβατών, εξυπηρετώντας 20.000.000 επιβάτες ετησίως. Το λιμάνι απασχολεί περισσότερους από 1.500 υπαλλήλους, οι οποίοι παρέχουν υπηρεσίες σε περισσότερα από 24.000 πλοία κάθε χρόνο. Το Λιμάνι του Πειραιά υπήρξε το λιμάνι των Αθηνών από την αρχαϊκή εποχή.
Οι Φράγκοι έδωσαν στον Πειραιά το όνομα «Πόρτο Λεώνε» ή «Ασλάν Λιμάν» όπως μετονομάστηκε το 1456 από τους Τούρκους, λόγω του μαρμάρινου αγάλματος ενός λιονταριού στην είσοδο του λιμανιού. Το άγαλμα εκλάπη το 1688 κατά την περίφημη αποστολή του Φραντσέσκο Μαροζίνι στην Αθήνα και μεταφέρθηκε στο Οπλοστάσιο της Βενετίας όπου και στέκετε ακόμα. Ομοίωμα του αγάλματος εκτίθεται στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο του Πειραιά.
