As a local teacher of Mathematics I thought it was high time to put out a cache series with a Mathematical theme. Each cache will highlight the achievements of a famous Mathematician, and of course feature a puzzle based upon their research. This cache series is not for the faint hearted, but in this modern age of technology, it should not be insurmountable to those that do their research.
Mathematical Conundrums - Tao
NOTE: (The cache is not at the listed coordinates).
My aim with this cache is to educate cachers about a top Australian Mathematician, Terence Tao. In fact he is one of the worlds top Mathematicians. Terence recieved the Fields Medal, largely for his work on the Green-Tao Theorem.
The Fields Medal is considered the highest honour to be bestowed upon a Mathematician, it is awarded at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM). The medal was first awarded in 1936 and since 1950 has been given out every 4 years. Terence Tao, otherwise known as Terry, was the first Australian to be awarded the Fields Medal, and was also one of the youngest to ever recieve the honour.
A = How many ICM events had been held prior to Terry being awarded the Fields medal?
B = The frequency with which the Fields Medal is currently awarded.
C = The 165th prime number.
D is a 2 digit non-prime palindromic number.
Now for a problem Terry would no doubt love.
Considering only the prime numbers, and ignoring all other numbers, find the first occurrence of two such numbers (one directly after the other), that are non-trivial palindromic numbers, (ie. have more than 1 digit). Find the mean of this result and plus 1, call the final result E.
To find the final cache coordinates, which are on land and within a 500m radius of the posted coordinates, use the following:
For the south coordinates: 34o (A-B).(C-3) '
For the east coordinates: 150o D.E '
The cache is a magnetic nano hidden at a location I often visit for work, and many times pass while simply out for a walk.
