Fort Zumwalt Park: Girl Scout Conestoga Day Camp Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

walkingstic-stl: We hate to archive this one. It's in a nice park, but it's way too accessible to muggle traffic and has gone missing several times. Apologies to those of you who have gone after it recently...

Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed as part of the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri’s Centennial Geocaching project “Caching in on our Legacy” celebrating the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouting in the USA.

Juliette "Daisy" Gordon Low began Girl Scouting in Savannah Georgia on March 12, 1912. In 1918 Girl Scout troop #1 was organized in St Louis and during the next decades Girl Scouting continued to grow throughout the area. In 1929 the council purchased property and established Camp Cedarledge in Jefferson County. Camp Fiddlecreek in Franklin County was established in 1956 followed in 1966 by Camp Tuckaho in Lincoln County. In 1968 the council celebrated its 50th anniversary and expanded to 12 counties including St. Charles, Warren and Lincoln counties. Camp Char-ren was acquired as part of this expansion.
Girl Scout day camps have always been one of our most popular programs and in 1984 over 5000 girls participated in our day camp program. Conestoga day camp was held at Fort Zumwalt Park in the late 1990's and continued to serve Girl Scouts in the St. Charles county area until the early 2000's .
The 48 acres Fort Zumwalt State Park was purchased in 1978 for $1 from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.  The park is named for Jacob Zumwalt’s settler fort.  (A settler fort is a fortified log home which sheltered frontier families from Native Americans on the warpath during the War of 1812.)  Zumwalt’s Fort was reconstructed in 2012 in conjunction with the bicentennial of the War of 1812.  The only part of the original fort is the limestone chimney.  There are 30 War of 1812 fort sites in Missouri but Zumwalt’s Fort is the only one owned by a municipal government.

An interesting place to visit in the park is the home of Darius Heald, circa 1886.  (It is open for tours during monthly special events in the park and also by appointment for groups of 10 or more. Admission fee is $2/person.)  Darius Heald, born in 1822, was a prominent figure in O’Fallon’s history and he built this home when he was in his 60’s.  The house was restored in 2001 by the O’Fallon Community Foundation.
We would like to thank the City of O'Fallon Parks and Recreation Department for granting us permission to place this cache.
