Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the oldest exposed rock formation in Oregon.  About a mile to the Southeast is a ridge line that is a limestone formation from the Devonian Age or 300 to 400 million years ago.

These rocks were separate island systems that collided with the North American Plate during the Cretaceous period more than 100 million years ago.  For more information I would recommend reading “In Search of Ancient Oregon” by Ellen Morris Bishop.  It is very readable with excellent photos to support the descriptions provided in the text.

The reason that the cache is located here rather than closer to the actual formation is that it appears to be private land and is posted.  The cache is locate on a road which leads to ranch land but is accessible to the public.
