The South to Salmo series continues! I never would have walked this trail if it weren't for Geocaching. It's beautiful!
The Nelson Salmo Great Northern Trail extends from Salmo to Nelson and on to Troup, following the former Burlington Santa Fe rail bed. This trail heading south is level, but some portions of it are better travelled than others, so the ground varies from groomed gravel to overgrown weeds. It is a great trail for walking or cycling, and in the winter, X-country skiing or snowshoeing.
The first kilometre or so of this stretch is quite marshy, so be aware that it might be a bit wet in the spring and early summer. Also please be aware of creek levels, as Clearwater Creek is quite close to the trail in some areas. I've tried to make this series winter accessible, so you shouldn't have to step too far off the trail (with a couple of exceptions!). I do recommend that you bring a pole as a snow shaker. As always, the GPS signal can bounce a bit around here. I'll try to give clear hints. If it looks like you have to step down a steep grade, or climb a mountain, stop! You're going the wrong way!
There are a few travel bugs in this series... please, one per customer.
