RIP Stapleton District
We were travelling along the old Coach Road from Batchelor to Adelaide River when we came across this lonely plaque about 12kms from Adelaide River in the middle of nowhere.
We drove about 2kms down the track next to the plaque without encountering anything that looked remotely like a cemetery so we returned to the plaque and examined the ground around the plaque a bit more carefully. We still couldn’t see anything that looked like graves however there were a number of metal markers in the ground around the plaque which could possibly be marking the graves, or the boundary of the cemetery.
We don’t know a lot about the history of this area. I have walked over a lot of this area with Norforce in the 80’s and 90’s without coming across this plaque before. We did find the following sites of interest on the internet which are worth checking out if you have an interest in old cemeteries.

Luckily our trusty geo-mobile was suitably equipped and we were able to make our best geocacher’s response to this providential situation.
