Ground zero is the junction of paths in a newly proclaimed Enviromental Park which has links to both Mon Repos turtle rookery and the adjacent Turtle Trail Walk. It also leads out to Bargara Road near the school.
For over 100 years the pasturage has been used for grazing cattle; for army training; for camping and walking. The Bundaberg to Bargara rail line which opened in 1912 ran through the middle of it. It has special significance as it contains one of the largest remaining stands of Silver Leafed Paperbark trees in South East Queensland. There are several ecosystems represented in the 312 hectare site...melaleuca wetlands, eucalypt forest, mangroves, salt flats as well as some patches of rainforest. Over 122 species of plants have been identified as well as 133 kinds of native birds. As it has just been declared interpretive signposting and other developmental work such as weed eradication have not yet been done. There is also cultural significance to the Taribelang people who were the original inhabitants.
You can enter from three different points. From each of them you have an easy flat walk of 1km along formed track. Parking is available at each of the entry points at the co-ordinates below.
Bring your own pen. No room for any swaps.
