Geocache Description:

The memorial monument for the battle of Helgoland on 9 May 1864, is one of the few encouraging events in the last unhappy Jutland war. It belongs to the island's history and the sailor life of the past. The Thurins was in fact in very large numbers participating as recruits on the frigates, including "Jutland", who fought at Helgoland. Therefore, year after year, the Thurins were hoisting the national flag on the flagpoles of the island on 9 May - that was if they where home! This day had to be remembered. But as the number of veterans got smaller (by the monument's inauguration in 1924 there were only 4 left), the flagging got scarcer and would in foreseeable time stop. Therefore the president of the Seamen's Association took initiative to establish the monument, though it was not easy. Men of the War Ministry listened unwillingly to the plan, but by perseverance and endurance and active help from the Thurø Seamen's Association the target was reached. The Ministry of War relented and gave the Seamen's Association the cannons as well as the anchor, which represents the parts of the monument. Every year on the 9th of May the flag is hoisted to the top of the flagpole behind the memorial monument to remember those who fought and bled, and, at least for a moment, to commemorate the inscription of the monument, placed by the island's former priest: "As long as the wave rolls on the coast of Helgoland, it whispers on the bloody battle on 9th of May". The small salute cannon from 2003 has been sponsored by a local resident. We think that this place on Thurø is worth a visit.
