Centreville - Former MML Geotrail Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

mdplayers: I stopped by and checked on this. It is gone. Might have gotten washed away in the big rains in August.

It was agreed that when it went missing, it would be archived.

Welcome to Centreville Town Wharf. The cache you are seeking is regular size lock n lock. It contains a log book and the usual swag in addition to trade items associated with this unique area. The cache is available 24-7. Please park in designated areas. Coordinates are provided herein. Parking at the nearby public landing requires a county landing permit. This is a Trash-in / Trash Out Park.

There are two histories of the Centreville Wharf. One is the history of all that occurred at the wharf, from the days when tobacco hogheads rolled down the hill and onto the ships that sailed from here to London, to the packet ships carrying our locally grown agricultural products to world markets and returning with all the goods needed for a booming Centreville life, to the coal brought up the Corsica to heat our homes, to the tons of fertilizer delivered to boost our crops, some of that fertilizer coming from half a world away. For over 150 years the world came to Centreville's door via the wharf.

The other history is the saga of Centreville's citizens and leaders hoping to find the best use for the wharf property for the long-term needs of the community. The 1998 Community Plan suggested development of the Wharf area with "uses that would retain the water-oriented historic nature of the site with a marina, marine store, restaurant, and waterfront park." Subsequent to the Town's purchase of the property in 2007, sidewalk connections were made to the downtown and an advisory committee recommended that the area be cleaned up and maintained, with shoreline stabilization including a boardwalk with "dinghy docks, kayak launching area, fishing pier, and parking area for the above activities". The 2009 Centreville Community Plan noted the viability of those earlier plans, indicating that "marketing the site as a boating destination and reinforcing the pedestrian link to the Town would create a new facet of interest in Centreville and contribute to the local economy".

The newly constructed improvements along the shoreline were approved by the Town Council and constructed in 2010 and 2011. In the three Town-owned parcels at the Wharf, there are now 10 new boat slips, bulkhead with tie-ups for transient boaters, fishing and boat loading platforms, a living shoreline restoration, walking paths, a pavilion and a gazebo.

You might want to get more local flavor on two nearby walking trails. You can take a leisurely stroll to the Captain's Houses from the Wharf parking area. Please walk on the pavement/path. Coordinates are listed below. The Millstream Trail is nearby as well. Walk on Corsica St. Turn on Creamery. You will find the Trail at the end of Creamery.
