The peak for viewing The Leonids in 2012 (the year the cache was placed) is November 17th. The radiant for this meteor shower is the constellation Leo of course!
The Leonids are associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle. They can be spectacular meteor storms streaking out from Leo's sickle.
The earliest known confirmation of The Leonids dates back to 901 AD as noted by the historian Eutychius of Alexandria. The most intense meteor storm recorded was from The Leonids in 1833.
