The 1893 World’s Fair, also known as The World Columbian Exposition, commemorated 400 years since Christopher Columbus set foot in the new world. It gathered technology from all over the world. Westinghouse outbid Edison for the contract to supply lighting and power to the fair. Over 200,000 electric light bulbs were illuminated using Tesla’s polyphase alternating current system.
Tesla also had a large display that included phosphorescent lighting – a precursor to fluorescent bulbs – that were powered without wires by high-frequency fields.
