Geocache Description:

Contrary to popular belief, the International Raceway is not I-40! For a time, Lakeland had its on racetrack owned by Garner of Lakeland Amusement Park. The track opened originally as just a drag strip in 1960 and later incorporated a full road course. In 1971 scenes for the movie Two-Lane Blacktop were filmed there. The track finally closed in 1979. The northern portion of the track was partially demolished to make way for the parking lot of the now empty Factory Outlet Mall. In 2008 the souther portion of the track was cleared to make way for a new subdivision, but construction has stalled since the clearing. Now all the remains is the asphalt road surrounded by trees. Everything else has been torn down or removed.

I said I'd never place a micro/nano, but I felt like this piece of local history needed a geocache. This cache is just off the northern end of the old raceway.

You do not need to tresspass to reach this cache. There are posted No Trespassing signs along the treeline around the raceway. The empty mall's parking lot also has No Trespassing signs posted. This cache is reached by Monroe Rd and is before entering the parking lot (and before the No Trespassing signs).

The mall's parking lot is still used by many people as a cut-through to and from Canada Rd, so do not be surprised if muggles drive past you.
