Geocache Description:

The New St. Elefterie Church (1 Elefterie Str.) is one of the biggest churches in Bucharest and it is located close to the National Opera. The church was built when the nearby Old St. Elefterie Church (20 Elefterie Str.) became too small to satisfy the spiritual needs of an increasing population.

On the island on Dambovita river - in the old Bucharest, within Podul Eroilor area – was a small village that later on became one of the most beautiful places in Bucharest. The people living there loved that place for its quiet and pleasant surroundings. Between 1743 – 1744 Maxim Cupetul built the Old St. Elefterie Church which was the first one having St. Elefterie as a patron saint. When several adjustments were made on Dambovita river the island disappeared, its place being taken by the existing district Cotroceni. Years later (1935) the main work at the New Elefterie Church started, but soon to be stopped during the Second World War (1939 – 1945). The official church opening was in June 1971 and after the earthquake from March 1977 several elements were consolidated (1977 – 1983).

The church is one of the largest in Bucharest with impressive dimensions (36 x 22 m) similar to Parcul Domeniilor Church or Targoviste Old Mitropoly.
