Geocache Description:

Murdunna Moments

Murdunna lies at the eastern end of King George Sound on the Forestier Peninsula in south-east Tasmania. The Tasman Highway passes through Murdunna and most people drive by without stopping on their way south to Eaglehawk Neck and then perhaps on to Port Arthur or Nubeenna. This cache might tempt you to spend a few moments in Murdunna.

You could spend a moment contemplating Murdunna's early history although little physical evidence of it now remains to be seen. The region was initially called the Sounds. In the 1840s there was a busy slaughter house and huts for butchers. The meat was shipped three times a week from an adjacent jetty and then by convict railway or boat to suppy goverment stations on Forestier and Tasman Peninsulas. The slaughter house was closed in 1859 for cost saving reasons.

Nearby Grave Island, can be visited at low tide (but that would take more than a few moments). Presumably this served as a burial place but no traces are visible now.

The population of modern Murdunna (the name is from an aboriginal word for star) now consists of a mix of permanent residents and non-permanent holiday makers. Once there was a post office and a school but they were closed a few decades ago. A popular recreation area is nearby Sommers Bay that would be worth spending a few moments visiting.

You could also visit the nearby Murdunna Store, a typical country store that also has a tearoom and fuel supply.

The Murdunna Moments cache is hidden on the shore on the western (furtherest from main road) side of the new pedestrian bridge. Spend a few moments finding the cache and maybe a few more moments exploring the coastline.
