In the 1920s the area was created into a man-made recreational lake and reserve for the citzens of Beechworth. Today it is used for swimming, fishing, walking, cycling and other forms of recreational use.

Lake Kerferd which was created in 1862 to dam the waters of Hurdle Swamp.
