A view point of the bomb craters left over from the IndoChina war, or the Secret War
FTF credit goes to ditikra, congratulations :)
This bomb crater field, located 32km to the east of Phonsavon, has been left as it was after the war finished in 1974. It has numerous large craters covering this small hill with old shattered bamboo still lying around.
The holes collect water so new growth is flourishing around them.
During the period 1963-1974, a Secret War was carried out by the US, under the direction of the CIA and without the knowledge of the Senate, against Laos. There were over 2 million tonnes of ordnance dropped on this small country, sitting between China, Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. There were 4 million large bombs, between 100-3,000lb each. There were 270 million smaller units in the form of cluster bombs, 30% of which failed to explode for a number of reasons. They are the legacy of the war and each year many people die in Laos from these Unexploded Ordnance or UXO, there are still 80 million of them out there!
The cache is a large plastic container wrapped in plastic bags, please replace them if they are torn or ripped. Inside the cache is a logbook(inside two separate plastic bags), spare plastic bags, a pen, a pencil and sharpener and 3 Koala Bear keyrings as trade items.
There should be no problem with muggles if you are careful, please replace the log book back in BOTH plastic bags, this is a very wet country.
The reason for the slightly high difficulty and terrain ratings are because during the wet season this may prove a tad more difficult to reach as the crater will be waterlogged and muddy. Most tourism happens here in the dry months so it should not be a big issue.
This field has been cleared of any UXO and it is safe to wander around.
The owner of a local restaurant will be the cache maintainer. He is very happy to see anything done that will bring tourists to this region, as Laos is a very poor country and still living under daily threat from over 80 million cluster bomblets, called bombies, which are still live and killing all the time.
