Il paese di San Sebastiano al Vesuvio sorge in provincia di Napoli, alle pendici del Vesuvio.
L'eruzione del Vesuvio del Marzo del 1944 distrusse 2/3 dell'agglomerato urbano.
Il paese è stato ricostruito negli anni successivi, ed oggi presenta un aspetto ordinato e moderno.
Figlio illustre di questa terra è il noto filosofo e giurista Gaetano Filangieri dei principi d'Arianello.
Al centro del paese sorge la Cattedrale, l'antica chiesa Madre di San Sebastiano Martire, con la sua imponente cupola maiolicata risalente al XVII secolo, ed elevata al rango di Santuario Diocesano, nel gennaio del 2007, dal Cardinale Arcivescovo di Napoli, Crescenzio Sepe. Il nome della cattedrale di San Sebastiano Martire riflette il culto di San Sebastiano, patrono della comunità di San Sebastiano al Vesuvio fin dalla sua costituzione. La chiesa è miracolosamente scampata a tutte le eruzioni del Vesuvio avvenute dalla sua costruzione.
La cattedrale, posta su un’alta gradinata in pietra lavica, ha una facciata in stile neoclassico, con due coppie di lesene corinzie che si ripetono anche nell’ordine superiore. L’interno, cun un’unica navata, presenta sei cappelle laterali con altari in marmo. Pilastri decorati con capitelli corinzi sorreggono gli archi di accesso alle cappelle e l’arco terminale della navata.
Di notevole pregio è l’organo in legno dipinto e dorato, è un'opera risalente al 700 di Domenico Antonio Rossi, noto costruttore di organi al servizio dei sovrani napoletani; l'organo è posto al centro della cantoria sul portale d’ingresso, ed è diviso in tre scomparti con 19 canne cilindriche in stagno.
Da notare una tela del settecento di scuola napoletana raffigurante la Madonna con Gesù Bambino e San Sebastiano.
Nell’ipogeo è situata la cripta, risalente a qualche secolo prima della costruzione della Chiesa Madre.
Il vecchio edificio comunale, ubicato in Via Roma di fronte al Santuario, fu edificato nella prima metà del XIX secolo. Al suo interno ha ospitato la sede del Ente Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio dal 1995 fino alla fine del 2008. Attualmente la sede principale del Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio è sita nel Palazzo Mediceo in Ottaviano.

San Sebastiano al Vesuvio is a town nearby Naples, just under the Vesuvius.
The eruption of Vesuvius in March of 1944 destroyed two thirds of the urban sprawl.
The town was rebuilt in the following years, and today has a modern shape.
Philosopher and jurist Gaetano Filangieri was born there.
The Cathedral of St Sebastiano Martire dominates the center of the town; it was built during seventeenth century, and elevated to the rank of Diocesan Sanctuary, in January 2007, by the Cardinal Archbishop of Naples, Sepe.
St.Sebastiano was a martyr, and he is the patron saint of the town nearby the Vesuvius dedicated to him.
The Cathedral, located on a high lava-stone steps, has a neoclassical façade, with two pairs of Corinthian pilasters that are repeated in the higher.
The interior has a single nave cun, has six side chapels with altars in marble. Pillars decorated with Corinthian capitals supporting the arches of the chapels access terminal and the arch of the nave.
Very valuable organ in painted and gilded wood, dating back to 700, in the middle of the choir on the entrance door.
The organ was built by Domenico Antonio Rossi, known organ builder in the service of the kings of Naples; it is divided into three compartments by 19 reeds cylindrical tin.
Note a painting of the eighteenth century Neapolitan school depicting the Madonna and Child with St. Sebastiano.
Inside the hypogeum there is the crypt, which dates back to several centuries before the construction of the Cathedral.
The old municipal building, located in front of the Cathedral, was built in the first half of the nineteenth century.
Inside hosted the headquarters of the National Park Authority Vesuvius from 1995 until the end of 2008, then moved to Ottaviano.
