The park is open all year round from 8.30am (weekdays) and 9am (weekends) until dusk (10pm at the latest in summer). Admission is free but there is a charge for parking.
Hardwick Heath consists of around 55 acres of open parkland and is managed for recreation and conservation. This site has had a varied and interesting history – a medieval grazing area for St Edmundsbury Abbey, it then became part of a large private estate owned by the Cullum family from 1656-1921. In 1921, the land and houses reverted to the Crown and were sold. Sadly Hardwick House was sold for demolition in 1926. The land upon which the house stood was purchased by Bury St Edmunds District Scouts.
St Edmundsbury Borough Council purchased the first half of this area in 1934 which now incorporates the car park and pavilion. During the Second World War this area was used as a Prisoner of War (POW) camp number 260. There were four blocks of 16 huts in each block. As you walk through the park towards the cache you will see the concrete remains of the camp around the football pitches.
The park is now home to many leisure activities; football, fishing, dog walking and Scouting to name but a few. This series of caches seeks to celebrate the life of the park in the twenty-first century and this one in particular is dedicated to the trees!
