Geocache Description:

A short trail in Nottingham City Centre highlighting the architecture of Watson Fothergill (1841-1928). Born Fothergill Watson and later changing his name he was one of the leading local architects practising on the Nottingham Area from about 1870 to 1906. All caches are magnetic micros containg a log sheet so BYOP.

Watson Fothergill worked in the Gothic Revival and Old English vernacular styles - very popular in Victorian times. These styles were loosely based on medieval churches and castles and 16th/17th century tudor buildings. Fothergill's buildings were very distinctive often featuring towers and turrets, tall chimneys and walls decorated with horizontal lines of blue/black bricks. His more important buildings were decorated with carvings of animals, plants, beasts and gargoyles. He often used heavy dark wood beams in porches and eaves of his buildings.

This cache is at the new Fothergill's offices built in 1893. At this time the Great Central Railway was being extended through the city so his Clinton Street offices had to be vacated. Built in flamboyant Gothic style there are four terra cotta panels just below the first floor windows showing the building of classical, medieval and Elizabethan buildings, the last one possibly being Wollaton Hall.

If you continue to #3 in the series by walking uphill and turning right into Hockley, and further on downhill you will pass another grand Fothergill building formerly the Nottingham and Notts Bank just off Thurland Street. Stop and observe the carvings and panels high up depicting the industry of the area.
