S. Illuminata era stato un by CouponDropDown">monastero fondato mille anni fa da S. Romualdo l’istitutore dell’ordine dei Camaldolesi. Egli stesso lo volle intitolare a S. Illuminata sua illustre concittadina che fu martirizzata al tempo di Diocleziano nella zona di Todi, dove si era rifugiata per sfuggire alla persecuzione.
Dopo circa 200 anni il complesso monastico fu ceduto all’ordine dei francescani e lo stesso S. Francesco vi dimorò a lungo, trascorrendo le ore del riposo notturno in una grotta situata accanto al convento, dormendo sopra un grande masso di travertino che con il tempo è divenuto liscio e levigato perché, in seguito, vi si distendevano tutti coloro che soffrivano di determinate malattie per ottenere la guarigione. Per secoli questo masso fu venerato sia dalle popolazioni vicine sia da persone che da lontano giungevano by CouponDropDown">qui in pellegrinaggio per pregare e impetrare grazie; era oggetto di venerazione anche una sorgente che sgorgava accanto alla grotta la cui acqua, limpida e fresca, è citata in documenti antichi come miracolosa.

A S. Illuminata vissero molti Beati tra cui il Beato Giovanni d’Avellino, il B. Giovanni d’Alviano ed il Beato Giovanni Tientalbene, così chiamato perché era solito dire a chi by CouponDropDown">incontrava “Tienti al bene”; quest’ultimo compì molti miracoli, ridiede la vista ad un cieco, guarito un paralitico ed una donna inferma.
Quando morirono, questi Beati furono sepolti nello stesso loculo chiuso da una grata e da uno sportellone di legno sul quale furono effigiati vestiti con gli abiti dei conventuali.
Ma il Beato più famoso e più venerato fu, e lo è tuttora, il B. Pascuccio della nobile famiglia degli Atti di Todi, nato ad Acquasparta nel 1435, le cui spoglie ora riposano nella chiesa parrocchiale di Guardea.
La chiesa di S. Illuminata fu scelta come ultima dimora da personaggi illustri appartenenti alle nobili famiglie dei signori di Baschi, dei signori di Alviano e, secondo i più antichi registri parrocchiali, qui volle essere sepolta la maggior parte delle persone o delle famiglie più rispettabili e più ricche di Guardea. A tale proposito, fino a pochi anni orsono, si vedeva un sarcofago di travertino sporgente all’interno della chiesa che recava il nome di Pentesilea con due scudi di travertino al cui interno c’erano due stemmi. Si trattava della tomba di una nobildonna non bene identificata. Noi sappiamo che la seconda moglie di Bartolomeo d’Alviano si chiamava Pentesilea Baglioni.
Non si sa di preciso perché e quando i francescani abbandonarono questo luogo, certamente non deve essere stato prima del 1635, anno in cui fu restaurato.
Dopo la partenza dei frati, il complesso fu affidato ad alcuni sacerdoti secolari che in veste di cappellani amministravano i sacramenti e custodivano le reliquie. Ma anch’essi vi restarono per poco tempo perché papa Innocenzo X, nel 1653, incorporò i beni di S. Illuminata alla parrocchia di S. Maria dell’Olmo di Amelia, che allora era povera, e la custodia della chiesa fu affidata ad eremiti che si mantenevano con le elemosine.
La presenza dell’ultimo eremita è attestata ai primi anni del 1800.
Da quel momento inizia la sua decadenza e nel 1869 la chiesa, ritenuta pericolante, fu interdetta e nessuna messa vi fu più celebrata. Proprio in questo periodo avvenne il furto del corpo del B. Pascuccio ad opera degli abitanti di Acquasparta, i quali furono costretti a restituirlo grazie all’intervento di Papa Pio VII e delle autorità civili onde evitare una guerra tra le due popolazioni.
Questo luogo così celebrato è immerso in un paesaggio incantevole circondato da una vegetazione lussureggiante e mentre attende di essere restaurato è meta di visitatori in cerca di pace e di serenità spirituale.
