Mrs Bear has always loved to look up the history of and to walk along the disused railway lines of the UK, in particular Essex. We hope that this could become a series of caches located at some of the interesting structures that used to form part of these railway lines.
This cache is a 35mm film pot, with log only. Please bring a scribbler.
The Halstead and Colne Valley railway ran between Chappel and Wakes Colne station and Haverhill. It was opened in stages between April 1860 and May 1863. The section that this bridge crosses was opened as a part of the final section in May 1863 and is near the station of Birdbrook, which is the last before joining the line from Cambridge to Sudbury at Haverhill. There is still a live steam railway museum just south of here at Sible Hedingham. The line was closed to passengers in 1961 and closed to freight in 1965. The line was eventually taken up in 1966.
The route of the Halstead and Colne Valley Railway is shown below.
The public footpaths around here tend to cross the disused railway, although you can walk along some sections, particularly to the north of Halstead. The cache is situated on the base of this rail bridge which crossed over the top of the road, but which is now gone, except for the brick wall supports.
We parked in a small lay-by, very close to the bridge. The road is quite narrow along here and there are houses very close, so you should be careful when searching. We hope that you enjoy this cache - don't forget to also look for Birdbrook Bridge 1.
Happy caching.
