Geocache Description:

In 1887 John Bidwell donated his eight-acre cherry orchard to establish the northern branch of the State Normal School for teachers in Chico. The cornerstone was laid in 1888. In 1921 the school became known as Chico State Teachers College. A new administration building was constructed (now known as Kendall Hall) in 1927 after a fire destroyed the original Normal School building.

The California legislature converted its teachers colleges to state colleges in 1935, and Chico State Teachers College became Chico State College. In 1961 Chico joined 12 other state colleges in the formation of the California State College system and eventually became the California State University system, the largest system of higher learning in the world.
