Geocache Description:

A short trail in Nottingham City Centre highlighting the architecture of Watson Fothergill (1841-1928). Born Fothergill Watson and later changing his name he was one of the leading local architects practising on the Nottingham Area from about 1870 to 1906.

During this time he designed over a hundred buildings including banks , churches, shops, and warehouses, many of which survive today. This walk around the city will take you to a small selection of his work. Watson Fothergill worked in the Gothic Revival and Old English vernacular styles - very popular in Victorian times. These styles were loosely based on medieval churches and castles and 16th/17th century tudor buildings. Fothergill's buildings were very distinctive often featuring towers and turrets, tall chimneys and walls decorated with horizontal lines of blue/black bricks. His more important buildings were decorated with carvings of animals, plants, beasts and gargoyles. He often used heavy dark wood beams in porches and eaves of his buildings.

This cache is a short walk from the building you are interested in. Once you have logged your find turn downhill past the roundhouse towards Nottingham Castle and once you have reached the square Mortimer House is in front on the LHS. This fine building was constructed in 1883 as a row of shops and offices. The roof line is extremely varied and complex as the building runs downhill. A square tower dominates the top end while a rounded turret caps the lower end. The style is described as less Gothic and more English vernacular. (acknowledgement goes to Watson Fothergill Society for the info) One of the frontages is now called Fothergills.

Cache containers are magnetic micros with just a log so BYOP. Stealth is required at each location. Enjoy.
