Geocache Description:

 

Pacific coast residents will hardly recognise the diminutive interior variety of the Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii glauca), yet by local standards it’s still the grand old tree of the Rockies. At its northern limit in Alberta, if you find a Douglas Fir in in Jasper National Park, chances are you’re on a dry south-facing slope. Known for its deeply furrowed bark that provides protection from the heat of passing fires. The cache can be reached from the trail.

Les résidents de la côte du Pacifique auront peine à reconnaître cette variété minuscule de douglas de Menzies (Pseudotsuga menziesii glauca) qui peuple l’intérieur des terres. Pourtant, cet arbre est considéré ici comme le géant des Rocheuses. En Alberta, il se trouve à la limite septentrionale de son aire de répartition. Si vous voyez un douglas de Menzies dans le parc national Jasper, vous vous trouvez probablement sur une pente aride à orientation sud. Cet arbre est bien connu pour son écorce profondément sillonnée qui le protège de la chaleur du feu. Le cache peut être atteint à partir de la piste.
