AMAZO: Went to check on this one today... the Wildlife and Whisky information board has been muggled?!?

Oh well, it looks like the canal is undergoing further regeneration with lots of new information boards and exercise equipment. I wonder if they will ever get round to building "The Maryhill Bigman"?

Geocache Description:

Mega Scotland 2014

A new series of AMAZO caches along the Forth and Clyde Canal. The trail starts at Spier's Wharf which is only 0.5 miles from Sauchiehall Street. I discovered this peaceful spot by accident during a maintenance run to "Glasgow's in Bloom" (GC2TCYG). Just follow the signs for the canal and a few minutes later you won't believe you are in Glasgow! The route follows towpaths and provides good walking conditions throughout.

The Forth & Clyde canal was designed by the eminent civil engineer John Smeaton and completed in 1790. Crossing the Scottish Lowlands at the narrowest part, the canal runs for 56km and provides a route for sea-going vessels between the Firth of Clyde and the Firth of Forth via a short stretch of the River Carron near Grangemouth in the east. Closed in 1963 to avoid the need to construct a motorway crossing, the canal became derelict. National Lottery funds were used to regenerate both the Forth & Clyde and Union canals as part of the Millennium celebrations in 2000 and the Falkirk Wheel, a unique boat lift, was completed in 2002 to provide a link between the two canals and allow boats to travel from the Clyde or Glasgow to Edinburgh.

It was the Glasgow Merchants who funded this part of the canal. The Glasgow Banch which used to continue down to Port Dundas. Goods such as grain and peanuts were brought via the canal from Europe and America. The seven storied building opposite was a Sugar Refinery. The City of Glasgow grain mills and stores occupied the other buildings opposite. Later taken over by the whisky industry. The worlds' largest Scotch Whisky distillery still exists on North Canal Bank Street. The original cobbled wharves and mooring rings remain today as evidence of the commercial activity which once took place here. The old grain houses opposite are now converted intoluxury homes.

Despite 200 years of industry wildlife flourished here in the heart of Glasgow. Water birds such as Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan and Little Grebe live on the canal and can be seen raising families in the spring. The Mallard male has a green head and the female is brown for camouflage when raising young. The Grebe dives under the water to catch insects. Look out for the Moorhen and Coot, both mainly black but the Moorhen has a red head, the Coot a white head.

The coordinates should take you to an information board. To find the cache you will only need to concentrate on the FIRST PARAGRAPH. By counting the number of letters in the FIRST WORD of each line and finding a date you should be able to solve the following...

N 55 52. (1st)(3rd)(4th)
W004 15. (2nd) (1st Number in date)(4th Number in date - 3rd Number in date)
