The 1st Special Service Force, also known as the Devil's Brigade or Black Devil's Brigade, was an elite, joint World War II American-Canadian commando unit organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana in the United States. The brigade fought in the Aleutian Islands, Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December 1944 due to the high number of causalties that the unit experienced in combat.. Modern American and Canadian special operations forces (known as SF) trace their heritage to this unit. I spent some time with 7th Special Forces Group, which also traces it's history to 1st SSF. The red crest worn on the beret of the modern 7th SF Group comes from the red field of the shoulder patch worn by the 1st Special Service Force. This veteran, Sgt. Joseph Harkness, was a member of an Elite Brigade of highly trained and decorated combat veterans who fought in some very difficult operations in World War II. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroism during his service.
